Pet Care Tips

Your Dog Doesn't Actually Need a Bath Every Week

Over-bathing strips the natural oils from your dog's coat and can cause dry, itchy skin. Most dogs only need a bath every 4 to 6 weeks unless they've rolled in something they're very proud of. In between, a quick brush does more for their coat than any shampoo.

Cats Don't Hate You. They Just Show Love Differently.

A slow blink from your cat is basically a kiss. Next time they stare at you and blink slowly, blink back. You're having a moment. Cats show affection through proximity, slow blinks and the occasional headbutt, not through wagging tails and jumping on you the second you walk in the door.

Your Pet's Water Bowl is Probably Disgusting

Most people refill the bowl without washing it. Bacteria builds up fast, especially in plastic bowls which scratch easily and harbour germs. Wash it daily like you would your own cup. Stainless steel or ceramic bowls are easier to keep clean and your pet will actually drink more when the water tastes fresh.

Boredom is the Root of Most Bad Pet Behaviour

Chewed furniture, excessive barking, scratching where they shouldn't. Nine times out of ten it comes down to a pet that has too much energy and nothing to do with it. A tired pet is a well behaved pet. More play time before you leave the house makes a bigger difference than any training trick.

The Slow Feeder Bowl is Not Cruel, It's Kind

Dogs that eat too fast are at risk of bloating, which in large breeds can actually be life threatening. A slow feeder bowl makes them work slightly harder for their food, which also keeps their brain engaged. They finish the meal, they're more satisfied and you're not watching them inhale a full bowl in four seconds flat.

Indoor Cats Need More Enrichment Than You Think

An indoor cat that has nothing to do will find something to do. Usually something you won't like. Rotate their toys every few days so things feel new, place a perch near a window so they can watch birds and bugs, and give them at least one dedicated play session a day. Ten minutes of active play does more for their mental health than leaving toys on the floor they've already lost interest in.

Your Dog Can Tell When You're Stressed

Dogs read human body language and cortisol levels better than most people realise. If you're anxious, they feel it. If you're calm, they settle. This is why dogs in chaotic households tend to have more behavioural issues. It's not always the dog.

Trim Your Cat's Nails Before They Redecorate Your Furniture

Cats scratch to shed the outer layer of their claws, stretch their muscles and mark their territory. You can't stop them from scratching but you can redirect it and keep their nails trimmed so the damage is minimal. A scratching post placed right next to the furniture they keep going for works better than one hidden in the corner of a room they never use.

Not All Human Food is Pet Food

Grapes, onions, garlic, chocolate, xylitol (found in sugar free gum and some peanut butters) and macadamia nuts are all toxic to dogs. Cats can't process many of the same things. When in doubt, don't share your plate. The puppy eyes are designed to make you feel guilty. Don't let them win.

A Pet That Sleeps Well Behaves Better

Just like humans, pets that get quality rest are calmer, more focused and easier to manage. Where they sleep matters. A cold hard floor or a worn out blanket doesn't give them the support they need, especially older pets with joint issues. A proper bed in a quiet consistent spot makes a real difference to how they feel day to day.

Dental Health is the Most Ignored Part of Pet Care

Most pet owners never think about their pet's teeth until there's a problem, and by then it's expensive. Dental disease affects the majority of dogs and cats over three years old. You don't need to brush them daily but even a few times a week with a pet safe toothpaste makes a significant difference. Dental chews help too but they're not a substitute.

Your Cat Knocking Things Off Tables is Not an Accident

It is entirely on purpose. They're testing gravity, seeking attention or just genuinely enjoying the chaos. The best response is no response at all. Reacting, even to tell them off, is exactly the entertainment they were looking for.
